Only the top 0.5% of social-science students and the top 1.5% natural-science students in the 15 enrollment provinces are eligible for this year's enrollment. Comprehensive quality training mode becomes an attraction for students
2018 marks the fifth year of undergraduate admissions of the University. Students, parents, middle schools and all walks of life have highly recognized the mode of running and the quality of teaching at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. As a result, the enrollment scores have increased year by year and CUHK-Shenzhen boasts the highest admission scores among all Guangdong universities for the third consecutive year. The minimum admission mark for social-science students this year is 621 (provincial ranking: 764), 71 points over the national key university line. All of them are ranked in the top 0.2% of the 320,000 social-science candidates in the province; The lowest score for natural science students is 630 points (provincial ranking: 2,896), 130 points over the national key university line and all ranked in the top 0.9% of the 330,000 natural-science candidates in the province. Among all the well-known colleges and universities who enroll students in Guangdong Province, CUHK-Shenzhen ranked 18th in terms of the admission score of natural-science students and 12th in terms of the admission mark of social-science students.
The enrollment quality of most the 25 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions has increased significantly compared with that of last year. The required Gaokao ranking for natural-science students in many provinces and cities has been narrowed to the top 1%. The situation in Guangdong, Henan, Gansu, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Guizhou, Shanxi, Guangxi and other provinces is even more gratifying. As a university with only a short history of four years, CUHK-Shenzhen has become increasingly prominent for high-scoring students in all provinces and cities across the country. For example, in Zhejiang Province, which has adopted the new college entrance examination model, CUHK-Shenzhen ranks the 12th in the list of universities with the highest admission scores; in Heilongjiang Province, the farthest province from Shenzhen, CUHK-Shenzhen ranks the 16th(natural-science). Beijing is home to most of the well-known universities in the country and CUHK-Shenzhen still ranks the 17th place(social-science) while n Shanxi Province, where the University just started to recruit students last year, CUHK-Shenzhen ranks the 9th(social-science) and the14th (natural-science) among all universities.
With the improvement of the society's requirements for the comprehensive quality of talents and the increasing demands of parents for the development of students' corresponding abilities and qualities, the mode of running and the education philosophy of CUHK-Shenzhen become very popular among secondary schools, parents, students, and society. Therefore, the heat of application has continued to increase year after year. A large number of outstanding candidates have chosen CUHK-Shenzhen as their first choice for admission to pursue academic dreams in this research university featuring both Chinese cultural heritage and international atmosphere. A parent of a well-performing Zhejiang student said, the reason she chose this university for her daughter is that she hopes her daughter can become an international talent with comprehensive quality that meets the requirements of the society. "I think CUHK-Shenzhen can cultivate people's critical thinking ability, creative thinking ability, communication ability, teamwork ability, multicultural awareness, computer application ability, mathematical analysis ability, and leadership."
Highly Competitive Comprehensive Evaluation Admission Mode
After four years of practice, the recognition of the University's education philosophy has been continuously enhanced. Following Guangdong Province, Zhejiang Province and Shanghai, Shandong Province has also joined the ranks of “Comprehensive Evaluation Admission Mode” for the first time. In the comprehensive evaluation admission mode, the score of college entrance examination, also known as Gaokao, accounts for 60%, the University's entrance test scores accounts for 30%, and the grade of high-school academic level test accounts for 10%. This year, the quality and quantity of students who participated in the comprehensive assessment tests have been greatly improved. After strict screening, 5,200 candidates from four provinces and municipalities have participated in the tests with a fierce competition: Nearly 1,800 students took the test in Guangdong and competed for 211 admissions; nearly 1,600 students in Zhejiang for 146 places; 500 students in Shanghai for 45 places; and 1,400 students in Shandong Province (first year) for 53 seats. Another feature is that the students who applied for the comprehensive evaluation tests this year are very prominent. Most of them are from key high schools such as Hangzhou No. 2 High School, Hangzhou Xuejun High School, Ningbo Zhenhai High School, Shenzhen High School, Shenzhen Foreign Language High School, South China Normal University High School, Guangdong Experimental High School, Zhixin High School, Shanghai Fudan High School and Shandong Experimental High School.
Candidates generally believe that although the exam is a bit difficult, it will not be out of touch with the knowledge learned in high school and has higher requirements for individual's cultural quality, thinking and perception of daily life and independent thinking ability. The comprehensive assessment mainly assesses students' observation ability, expression ability, Chinese and English writing ability, and comprehension and analysis ability that are not involved in the National College Entrance Examination. This comprehensive evaluation of the multi-admission mode has been widely praised by parents and society.
Scholarship coverage rate is about 53%, benefiting more average families.
This year, the University continued to increase the quotas of freshmen's enrollment scholarships. In 2018, more than 600 students received different types of scholarships, and the scholarship coverage rate was about 53%. The full scholarship of RMB 120,000 per year, the tuition-free scholarship of RMB 95,000, the half-tuition-free scholarship of RMB 47,500, and the Liyun scholarship of RMB 30,000 are helping more students to fulfill their dreams at this international university. In addition, the annual Bowen scholarship of 30,000 RMB is not based on the results of the college entrance examination, but through the recommendation of key middle schools, self-registration, as well as the students' high school performance, comprehensive quality, innovation consciousness and international vision. This year, over 600 students with outstanding overall performance received such scholarship.
CUHK-Shenzhen also set up the “Nobel Class” for the first time this year. Before the college entrance examination, Prof. Xu Yangsheng, the president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, wrote an article named Relaxed but not Slack to teach candidates how to play better in the college entrance examination and how to ease the tension before the exam to calmly deal with the important turning point. During the comprehensive evaluation examinations, President Xu Yangsheng personally visited the test sites in Shenzhen, Shandong and Zhejiang to meet the candidates and cheer for them. After the admission results were released, some students wrote to President Xu to express joy and loss and President Xu Yangsheng have patiently replied the candidates for many times. Some students even received President Xu's essay collection Gifts from the Teacher", which condenses Xu's life reflections and encourages students to be strong and confident. The text and care of the president accompanied the students through the whole college entrance examination season.
