Tom Luo receives the Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization

Prof. Tom Luo received the Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization for outstanding contributions in continuous optimization July 2,2018.

Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship committee of the Mathematical Optimization Society awarded Prof. Tom Luo the Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization for outstanding contributions in continuous optimization on July 2nd. He is invited to deliver a keynote speech at the 23rd International Symposium on Mathematical Programming in Bordeaux, France.

Prof. Tom Luo, vice president (Academic) for The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, was awarded the prize for his contributions to the field of continuous optimization, as well as his work in promoting continuous optimization research in the Asia Pacific region.

 

Prof. Tom Luo, is currently the director of the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and the lab director of CUHK,Shenzhen-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) ,and a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Professor Luo's research mainly addresses mathematical issues in information sciences, with particular focus on the design, analysis and applications of large scale optimization algorithms. He consults regularly with industry on topics related to signal processing and digital communication.

The Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization was established in 2011. The purposes of the lectureship are to commemorate the outstanding contributions of Professor Tseng in continuous optimization and to promote the research and applications of continuous optimization in the Asia-Pacific region.

Awardees of the prize have made significant contributions to the field of continuous optimization, consisting of original theoretical results, innovative applications or successful software development. The first Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization was awarded to Yinyu Ye, Stanford University and Masao Fukushima, Nanzan University.

 

 

Prof. Tom Luo's Profile

Professor Luo received his B.Sc. degree in Applied Mathematics from Peking University, China in 1984, and a Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. Professor Luo received the 2010 Farkas Prize from the INFORMS Optimization Society for outstanding contributions to the field of optimization. Prof. Tom Luo is currently the vice president (Academic) for The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Prof. Tom Luo is also the director of the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and the lab director of CUHK,Shenzhen-Tencent AI Lab Joint Laboratory of Machine Intelligence.In 2014, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada, the highest honor a Canadian scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. 

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) ,and a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Professor Luo's research mainly addresses mathematical issues in information sciences, with particular focus on the design, analysis and applications of large scale optimization algorithms. He consults regularly with industry on topics related to signal processing and digital communication. Professor Luo has published over 200 refereed journal papers, conference papers, books and special issues. He has served as an Associate Editor for many internationally recognized journals including Management Science, IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, SIAM Journal on Optimization, Mathematics of Computation, Mathematics of Operations Research, and other.

 

Previous Awardees of the prize

In 2012, The Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization was presented for the first time to Yinyu Ye, the K.T. Li Chair Professor of Engineering at Department of Management Science and Engineering and Institute of Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Stanford University. He has been at the forefront of continuous optimization and in particular research into interior-point methods for over 20 years. His accomplishments span the breadth of optimization including fundamental theoretical contributions into interior-point methods and the promotion of novel applications of optimization in economic markets and distance geometry.

Masao Fukushima from Nanzan University received the prize in 2015. He has carried out pioneering research in the development of methods for optimization and equilibrium problems. He has played a leading role in the optimization community of the Asia Pacific region for many years.
