Jonah (University of Warwick

It’s one eventful day after another, here at CUHK-Shenzhen. Having gradually acclimatised to life on campus, we had been setting our sights on the great beyond: the unknowns of the city itself. Through museums and shopping streets, we got a feel for the atmosphere, the spirit of Shenzhen. From recent naval history to milk tea, there was so much amazing stuff to take in! So, even though the sun was blistering and the sweat plentiful, by the end we had all had that first taste of what’s out there – a tantalising appetiser, enticing us into further exploring and experiencing this enormous metropolis at our doorstep.

My warmest thanks to the OAL team for having organised this trip – not to mention the incredible support they have offered from the very start of our applications to CUHK-Shenzhen. Here’s to a great term!

Aaron (Technical University of Dortmund

Thanks to the OAL team I could learn about a totally different aspect of Shenzhen,  the Hakka culture. Quite a contrast to the modern and vibrant metropolis. And afterward we could experience the rapid transition of Shenzhen into today's metropolis in Shenzhen's top museums. All in all It was a perfect day.

The city tour was a great experience. Although most people know Shenzhen is a very new and rapidly built city, most people don’t realize just how fast. Although the tour took the whole day downtown, we would still never be able to experience the whole city in a day. Shenzhen is so big, new, clean, and spread out which makes it a very unique city. The amount of things going on at all times, construction and markets, for example, shows that the pace that Shenzhen has grown is not stopping now. I can’t wait to see how the city is in a few years and to take another city tour in a completely new part of downtown.

We had a great time at the City Tour yesterday. First, we stopped at an older district and I got to eat traditional Cantonese food! It was so delicious. We also got to visit two museums where I learned about China and Shenzhen‘s history. I found this really interesting! Our tour guide Rita was so enthusiastic and engaging. Finally, we went to a market where I got to see vendors selling things. Overall the day was very informative and fun! The food was delicious and Ting and OAL did everything to ensure we had water and had a great day! I would recommend all exchange students to do this tour.

With experiencing the city tour, I was able to benefit from a various new things from it, as well as refresh the memory I was taught in history class. Touring the museums provided me with the knowledge of not only Chinese history but also their culture, and even more Shenzhen. To be honest, I was really looking forward to visiting Chinese museums and galleries from the very beginning of my studying in here. Therefore it was such a satisfied and precious experience to me. I really appreciate what they have prepared and done for exchange students. Everything was well organized and well programmed even though they have mass crowd of people. And also I would like to express my sincere gratitude for students of CUHK-Shenzhen , who welcoming us with their whole heart.

My favorite part of the city tour was exploring the Hakka village. It was incredible to see traditional architecture, taste local tea, and enjoy the tranquil vibe of the small settlement. My favorite moment was singing Peng You with both Chinese and foreign students and hearing the saxophone player’s cover of Little Apple (小苹果). Awesome cultural experience!

I'm very grateful to all the staff of CUHK-Shenzhen who were responsible for the exchange students this semester. Moving to a new country is always a nerve-wrecking experience, and I felt as though we were all welcomed with open arms and truly treated as guests. I am impressed by all of the preparations made, such as with the Welcome Dinner, Orientations, Shenzhen City Tour and so much more. I am looking forward to the next four months and all the experiences it will bring!

The city tour was an excellent way for me to explore parts of Shenzhen that I would probably have a difficult time to see otherwise! We visited 4 different places with diverse attractions and cultural meanings. My favourite place was the industrial shopping area, because I got to see a mix of traditional and modern Shenzhen, and how vibrant the area has become. Our tour guide also gave us a great account of the history of Shenzhen, and I feel like I have a greater understanding of the city I will be spending the next 4 months. Thank you for all the hard work all the staff and student volunteers put in to make this trip possible!
