On January 21st, a Shaw College Photography Technique Workshop was held at E206 lectured by Jiang Tao from Shaw College Office.

Jiang Tao, the speaker of today’s event, is a contract photographer of Visual China Group. He is adept at the photography of scenery, portrait and sports. He once worked in the Guangzhou Daily Group and has filmed large-scale sports events such as the Super League, the CBA League, the ATP Shanghai Masters, the Snooker Masters; in addition to other social hot spots such as the college entrance examination, the Canton Fair, and the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

In this photography technique workshop, Mr. Jiang introduced the function of ISO, aperture and shutter in photography.

ISO stands for light sensitivity, and is the reflection the film’s sensitivity. The higher the value of ISO, the brighter the picture will be. Aperture is a device used to control the amount of light that passes through the lens and enters the surface of the camera. It is usually inside the lens. The larger the aperture, the smaller the aperture value is, and the brighter the picture will be. The shutter is the mechanism used to control the effective exposure time of the photosensitive film, and is an important component of a camera. In general, the slowest speed should be above 1/80-1/100 seconds. For shooting basketball games or other fast moving objects, the shutter should be set to 1/400-1/500 seconds.

Aside from ISO, aperture and shutter, Mr. Jiang also mentioned that when taking pictures of a mega-event such as a formal dinner, we needed to control the relationship between the depth of field and aperture in order to obtain an ideal effect.

Learning these basic photography knowledge is merely the first step in taking great pictures. Students still need to hone their photography skills through further exploration and practice.
