Activity Review| Shaw College wish you Happy Dragon Boat Festival
Unfold the reed leaves, fill it with sticky rice, honey dates and ripe it up with ropes that embody good luck. Zongzi carries our earnest wish for the Dragon Boat Festival.
1. Ingredients:
As everyone’s taste differs, Shaw College offered pork, salted egg yolk, honey date, and red beans as the filling of Zongzi. The dried reed leaves and ropes had been cleaned and soaked in advance.
2. Making Procedures:
1)Unfold the reed leaves into the shape of a funnel
2)Put a spoon of sticky rice, along with other ingredients——pork or salted egg yolk into the leaves. After putting another spoon of sticky rice, press it and bind it.
3)Boil the Zongzi for about 2 hours and……mission complete!

“The experience of making Zongzi is an intriguing and unforgettable experience. I wasn’t able to make Zongzi by myself before but now, I gradually gained the know-hows. From the chef’s introduction, I got to know some basic raw materials for making Zongzi-——reed leaves and straw ropes. I gave it a go by myself later. Two reed leaves should be overlapped together and the rough side should be the inner side. By touch, you can figure out the smooth side and the rough side. One of the senior students kindly reminded me to observe the vein of the leave so as to distinguish the rough side. After rolling the leave to the funnel shape and filling it with sticky rice and red beans, we have to be cautious when pressing it to store the taste. Also, it is vital to close the leaves after filling it, which requires patience and prudence to avoid spill out the filling. It entails preoccupation, concentration and collaboration in terms of making Zongzi. I am so delighted today and I enjoy this opportunity to spend time with other family members from Shaw College.

I registered the activity with great anticipation when receiving the invitation of ‘zongzi-wrapping activity’ organized by Shaw College. When I arrived, there were already over 70 people at the venue and the atmosphere was congenial and vivid. After starting wrapping zongzi under the instruction of the chef, zongzi of various shapes appeared on the plates. The interactions between us and Annie’s weird song are also amusing. I really enjoyed myself in this activity!
