On May 19th, Dr. Michael Waterman, a world-renowned bio-informatics scientist, received the honoraryprofessor certificate from Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

       On May 19th, Dr. Michael Waterman, a world-renowned bio-informatics scientist, received the honoraryprofessor certificate from Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Prof. Waterman became the first honorary professor of CUHK(SZ) and the first to deliver a Masters lecture in the Masters Lecture Series at CUHK(SZ). After the ceremony, Prof. Waterman, as a pioneer of this scientific discipline,gave a lecture on Reading DNA Sequences Along Eulerian Paths, which introduced thelatest research results, technology development and scientific progress to facilitate CUHK(SZ)’s research,education and social outreach.

        Prof. Waterman is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Also he is a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences and foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received the Friendship Award from the Chinese government in 2013.

       

Prof. Michael Waterman spoke on CUHK(SZ) campus for bio-informatics

        On May 19th, Michael Waterman, a world-renowned bio-informatician, took over the honorary professor offer from Xu Yangsheng, President of Chinese University of HK, Shenzhen [CUHK(SZ)]. It was a historic moment for both Prof. Watermen and CUHK(SZ) for he has become the first honorary professor since the foundation of the university and the first grandmaster landed for one of our premium academic forums at the same time. After the ceremony, Prof. Waterman delivered a speech on bio-informatics as the founder of this scientific discipline, whichaims to introduce the latest technology developments and scientific progress to better achieve CUHK(SZ)’s functions of research, personnel training and social services.

        Professor Michael Waterman was elected to be the fellows of the Academy of Arts and Sciences USA, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Foreign Academy of French Academy of Sciences and the Foreign Academy of Chinese Academy of sciences. Professor Michael Waterman elaborated on computational biology and bio-informatics, focusing on combining maths, Biological statistics and Computer science to molecular biology, especially on research for DNA, RNA and protein sequence data. In the year 2002, Professor Waterman won the Best Dana Foundation International Award and was then granted the China Friendship Award issued by Chinese government  in 2013 .
