Dr. Gong Wengao, Assistant Dean of School of Humanities and Social Science delivered the opening speech, hoping that all the competitors could get desirable grades. The four judges were Prof. Sui Yun, Dr. Chang Liwen, Mr. Zhou Bo and Ms. Tang Jiawen.

After the preliminary contest held on the 15 March, fifteen students were shortlisted for the finals, including Li Xuewei, Shi Xiyang, Li Yue, He Liubo, He Huilan, Yang Yuhan, Huang Xinyu, Ding Yu, Huang Minxin, Wang Xiangli, Zhang Wenkang, Fan Zequn, Li Jiaming, Li Fengzhi and Wang Tong. Top competitors in the contest would be offered entry tickets to the East China Finals of the 8th National Interpreting Competition to held in Guangzhou soon.

The competition was in the form of consecutive interpreting with the theme of “Law and AI” (Chinese to English) and “Cyber Break-in” (English to Chinese). Both speeches were very challenging due to the fast speed and extensive information. To achieve high scores, competitors need to rise to the challenge and deliver as much information as possible fluently in both languages with great confidence.

The competition lasted over three hours, during which contestants presented satisfactory interpretation. It is also worth mentioning that the performances of undergraduate students, in particular, earned the admiration of all the judges. While Prof. Sui highlighted the importance of listening and understanding, she also suggested that students should not pay too much attention to note-taking and miss the point.

Among all the competitors, Li Jiaming retook the first prize and defended his title. Zhang Wenkang and He Huilan won the second Prize. The third prize goes to Li Fengzhi, Huang Minxin and Fan Zequn. The competition came to a successful end!
