The First Four-Year Project

In 2014, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) ushered in its first batch of undergraduate students, who are dubbed as “The First Huangpu Class of CUHK-Shenzhen”. They witnessed the birth and the rapid development of the University. They have supported and participated in the student union, clubs, and university departments. CUHK-Shenzhen is not only their cradle of dreams, a place to brainstorm, but also their family with shared memories.
In the past four years, “The First Huangpu Class” has created unique nicknames and references for seemingly ordinary matters on campus. These vocabularies made out of creativity and humour have become slangs known among students, making unique and indelible imprints at CUHK-Shenzhen. This exhibition hall is themed by these words in various scenarios on campus, recalling memories of collective events, so as to present their unique lives at CUHK-Shenzhen through photos, videos, objects and art installations.

The graduation curatorial team attempts to restore the life of “The First Huangpu Class of CUHK-Shenzhen” at CUHK-Shenzhen. With an emphasis on feelings, emotions, and thoughts, they dig into their individual explorations, struggles, and reflections with an identity of “the first batch of undergraduate students at CUHK-Shenzhen” as a whole.
This exhibition hall, themed by “settings”, explores students’ lives from multiple dimensions. Each work is characterized by a significant moment and event. The exhibition is displayed in a tone that is humorous and metaphoric rather than funny or obscure, engaging visitors in experiences, memories, and reflections of the university that the first graduating undergraduates have from different settings.
